Hey guys, it’s Ro, welcome to another Nerdy Nummies! We have made so many super hero themed treats that I thought, it’s time to celebrate a villain! I got so many requests from you guys to make something Harley Quinn themed, and the new Suicide Squad movie is coming out So I thought, perfect timing, let’s make a Harley Quinn themed cake

And for the first time ever on Nerdy Nummies, let’s make a checkered cake! So when you cut into it, it looks like a checkerboard Let’s get started! To make this cake, we are gonna need to make 4 cakes 2 black cakes and 2 red cakes I have ingredients for 2 cakes, so just remember, you’ll have to double it! The things you will need, will be: 2-1/2 cups of water, 2/3 cup oil, 6 eggs, we’re only gonna be using the whites 2 boxes of white cake mix, 1 large box of vanilla instant pudding

To make our red cakes, we will need 1-1/2 tablespoons of red food coloring To make our black cakes we will need 1 tablespoon of black food coloring And then we will need 2 round 10 inch cake pans, a 6 inch cake board and a 2 inch cookie cutter Now let’s put it all together! In a big mixing bowl we are gonna combine both of our cake mixes, our pudding, our 6 egg whites, oil, and water, and mix it together Now we are gonna add our red food coloring

Mix it up 1 more time until it’s the color red you want Our red cake batter is all ready and over here I have 2 pans, I’ve greased them and lined the bottom with a piece of parchment paper And now we’re ready to pour our batter into each of the pans I’m gonna pour 1/2 into each, I’m just gonna eyeball it Oh you guys, I got a joke! What is Batman’s favorite food? Ba-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na – nana! Erphhhmmrph! Got my spatula, now I’m gonna smooth it out! Our cakes are ready to bake and now you’re gonna heat your oven to 350 degrees and pop both of these in there, bake for about 25-30 minutes

And while they are baking I’m gonna do the exact same thing, I’m gonna make 2 more black cakes All of our cakes have baked, we’ve got 2 red cakes and 2 black cakes I’ve leveled off the top, so that they’re flat And, not only have I given them plenty of time to cool, but I popped these into the freezer The reason I did this is because when you’re cutting out the circles and shapes, it prevents crumbling or breaking, because we’re gonna be cutting out a bunch of circles! You’re gonna take the 6 inch round circles

This is just a piece of cardboard cut into a circle, and I’ve wrapped it in food-safe plastic wrap Place it in the middle of your cakes, then take a sharp cutting knife and we’re gonna cut it out You’re gonna cut all the way through, and try to make it 1 solid piece Then take another sharp cutting knife and do the same to your black cake Now we’re gonna pop out our circles, we’re gonna try to do this in 1 piece! So, just using your fingers, be gentle, and go underneath the cake

Up-up-up-up-up! There it is! Just place it right here! Then do the same for your black cake Next take your circle cookie cutter, and we're gonna cut out the middle Then do the same thing over here Now we're gonna assemble these, this one’s gonna go red, black, red, and this one is gonna go black, red, black So I like to start with the little one, put him in here

Boop! Boop! Pick him up, put him in here, boop! This is what they should look like, and now we’re gonna do the same thing to our 2 remaining cakes! Time to assemble our checkerboard cake! Over here I’ve got a cake plate and a little bit of buttercream frosting, I’ve dyed it red and I’ve cut off the end So I’m just gonna put a little bit of frosting down I’m gonna take the first layer Place it right in the middle! I’m just eyeballing it! After you place it, cover with frosting I’m just frosting a thin layer

Take a spatula, smooth it out Agh-haahhh-kandhhh… Ah-haa-haa-haaa—haaa! Looking good, now we’re gonna add our next layer, remember you want to alternate them This is black, so then you want to add red, and then black, and then red! Our cake is assembled, and now we are going to frost the top, and the sides I like to start on the top, here I just have buttercream frosting, I’ve dyed it red Put it in a plastic baggie and cut off the end

Then, take your spatula, smooth it out Top is frosted and now I’m gonna frost the sides I put my cake stand on a turntable, just to make it a little bit easier Eee-dee-da-dee! Dee-dee-da-dee, da-dee-da-dee! Dee-dee-da-dee, da-dee-da-dee! And now, it is time to decorate, this is my favorite part Over here we’ve got 3 different colored fondant, we have regular, marshmallow fondant, just leaving it white, black and red

Some mini edible pearls, these are white drages! Little mini white gum balls, white buttercream frosting, I’ve got it in a plastic baggie, with a number 12 tip a small circle cookie cutter and a diamond shaped cookie cutter The first thing that we’re gonna do is roll out our black fondant I’ve got a piece of wax paper down here on the surface so that it won’t stick Now to cut out some diamonds

You’re gonna take your diamond cookie cutter, and you’re gonna need to cut out a bunch of these Because they’re gonna go all the way around the bottom of the cake We’ve got all of our diamonds cut out, and now we are gonna place them at the bottom of the cake, like a border, and go all the way around With a little pearl in between We finished the diamond design at the bottom, and now we’re gonna take these little edible white pearls, I’m using some baking tweezers, just to make this a little bit easier

But, you are gonna place one of these at the top of each diamond, boop! And go all the way around Our diamond designs are looking good and I’ve got some white buttercream frosting here to pipe along the bottom border Just a reminder, I have a number 12 tip, and we’re gonna be making little dots, all the way around Next we’re gonna decorate the top of the cake by rolling out our white fondant Once you’ve got your fondant rolled out, now we are going to use a little fondant cutter, and cut out our design

And if you don’t have one of these, that’s totally fine, you can just use a sharp cutting knife Now I’m just gonna cut out a whole bunch of wiggles, like this… I’ll show you, because this isn’t really that helpful! I’m cutting out the collar of Harley Quinn’s classic comic book outfit Got our design cut out, now we’re gonna peel up the extra fondant and place it in the center on the top of our cake Got some excess white fondant rolled out over here and I’m just gonna cut out 2 small circles, with our little circle cookie cutter Doo-doo! Like theeeese! And then 2 rough, large eye shapes, don’t have to be perfect, because these are gonna be on the back end

Like I said, they don’t have to be perfect! To complete Harley Quinn’s Jester outfit, we are going to roll out red and black fondant, and cut out pieces to make her jester hat and mask Once you have all your shapes cut out, we’re gonna do a little bit of assembly We’re gonna take these little floppy things and we’re gonna place them on the back of our mask to cover the eyes And when you turn it around…

Looks just like her mask! Got all of our pieces cut out and now we are gonna attach our little white circles to the jester hat So I’m gonna dab a little bit of water, then stick him on We’ve got our jester hat pieces all ready, and I’ve cut a little slit on the top of the fondant over here on the cake And I’m just gonna place them right there Doo-doo, da-dew-dew! Now we’re gonna put our mask on, and you can just lean it right against our hat

Final decoration step, we’re gonna add these little mini white gum balls right here, at the end of each loops on her collar Then we’re just gonna do this all the way around Ta-da! Here is the Harley Quinn themed cake that we made today!
